SURGERY DAY

GENERALLY
- Arrive @1 hour before surgery.
- Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery.
- You will need someone to take you home.
- After surgery you will be on crutches if having a knee surgery and most likely be using a sling if you have a shoulder surgery.
- Wear comfortable loose fitting clothes and leave any valuables at home. Gym shorts are appropriate for surgery.

SURGERY DAY FOR YOU

Surgery is generally done on an outpatient basis. It’s a 4-5 hour day for you. We have you come in an hour before surgery to meet the staff and get all the necessary lab work taken care of. The anesthesiologist will discuss all the appropriate options related to anesthesia with you. Remember not to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery as we don’t want anything in your stomach during this elective operation. You will have to have someone take you home after surgery. We will provide crutches for you if you have a knee surgery and a sling if you have shoulder surgery. You may bring your own crutches if you have them already. Please wear something comfortable and leave your valuables behind. Shorts are appropriate for knee surgery.

For shoulder surgery, easy loose fitting clothes (with buttons or zippers) are comfortable after surgery. We will either provide you with prescriptions prior to surgery or give you prescriptions after surgery so you can go to the pharmacy. Please be aware of any possible allergies and inform us of this. If you are taking any medicines that could influence bleeding such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines, heparin, or coumadin, please discuss these with us and stop taking them 1 week before the surgery. You can call our office with questions at anytime. Generally, I will call you at home to check on you the following day and I will see you for your first post-operative visit back in the office the following week.
